A fine pair of early 18th century oval marble reliefs
A fine pair of early 18th century oval marble reliefs depicting allegorical figures, probably America and Asia. English, c.1700. Beautifully carved in mid-relief and later fitted in ebonised & moulded frames. The figure representing Asia is adorned with a garland of native flowers and wears a medallion depicting a Camel. The figure representing America is shown with a quiver of arrows and wears an archer’s hat. An inscription verso suggests the plaques once came from a private collection in Boston, Massachusetts.
