A rare late 17th century dummy board figure, circa 1690, depicting an elegant lady in an ermine trimmed dress with lace cuffs, with her hands in a fur muff and a fontange upon her head. It is unusual to see a figure depicted in profile.
Dummy boards were popular in the 17th and early 18th century, several theories exist as to their purpose but most likely is that they are a playful conceit, relating to the fashion for trompe l’oeil. Beautiful, rich colours. Would look lovely in early interior.
