A rare mid 18th century Italian Castelli majolica charger
A rare mid 18th century Italian Castelli majolica charger of unusually large dimensions. Beautifully painted with pastoral figures fishing in a classical Italian landscape with two hill towns in the distance, all within an ochre rim.
The landscape is painted in the style of French engraver Gabriel Perelle (1604-1677). Prints were commonly used as sources of design in the Castelli workshops, and were sometimes pricked for direct transfer.
In very good condition with one small chip to the glaze and minor marks to the rim. It is remarkable that a charger of this scale has survived in this condition.
Measures 47cm diameter
