A very rare early 18th century chimney board painted with a vase of flowers, English c.1720-30. Oil on canvas laid onto pine. Chimney boards were used to seal fireplaces against draughts and soot in the summertime when they weren’t being used and typically depict vases of flowers. Very few have survived, even fewer in England. There is a similar example on display in the V&A. This example has an old inventory label verso, implying it was once part of a collection, possibly a museum.
