Attributed to Joseph Highmore (1692-1780). A finely painted early 18th century portrait of a young gentleman, probably depicting Thomas Lee (1725-1747). Circa 1736. Oil on canvas in a period carved frame. The Lee family were great patrons and friends of Joseph Highmore who frequently painted members of the family, including an ambitious group portrait which hung in the dining room at Coton Hall and now resides in the Wolverhampton Museum (purchased in 1984). This portrait was likely commissioned by the family in the early decades of the 18th century and resided in the drawing room until 2003 when the house was sold. Thomas Lee was president of the Colony of Virginia and builder of Stratford Hall, Virginia in the 1730s.

Provenance - Coton Hall, Alveley, Shropshire (ancestral seat of the Lee family). Probably commissioned in the 1730s by the Lee family. The portrait remained in the drawing room at Coton Hall until the house was sold in 2003. Purchased by the current owner in 2016.
