A rare Dutch portrait of a gentleman in his study, attributed to Gonzales Coques
A rare Dutch portrait of a gentleman in his study, attributed to Gonzales Coques (Between 1614 and 1618-1684). He is shown reading at his desk which is covered with a fringed table-carpet. The details of the interior are of interest; behind him are a bookcase partly covered by a curtain and a viol hung on the drab coloured wall. A mirror is hung at an angle above the desk, the chairs are covered with red fabric.
Coques was a Flemish painter known for his portraits and history paintings, he was known as ‘the little Van Dyck’ because of his emulation of the artist. Oil on canvas, old re-lining circa 1900. Covered with a shiny varnish and would benefit from having this removed. Old inscription to the stretcher: ‘Gonzales Coques, École Hollandaise 17’. This is a highly evocative scene by a well regarded artist.
